I’m in my 30s and I feel like Sudan has been in humanitarian crisis for as long as I can remember tbh. 

So, I’ve seen passing headlines in my news apps that there’s conflict going on there, but I hate to say I haven’t looked into it more because it doesn’t feel particularly notable. 

Like another “North Korea threatens” headline. It feels like horrible conflict and humanitarian crisis in Sudan is a thing that periodically happens. I can extrapolate the reasons, but there isn’t much I can do about it, so reading about it in more detail won’t serve to do anything except depress me rn.

This might be the first time I've seen it mentioned in the last year. 

Having now looked it up, I do remember hearing some about it in 2023, but since then a lot of other things have been much higher prominence in my news feeds.

I don't watch TV really. Most of what I see leans USA-centric, but there's a few international conflict focused youtube creators I watch (mainly Perun and William Spaniel, with a smattering of other adjacent things when there's a conference or something, plus some related history).  In these I've heard much more about Ukraine and Russia, sometimes Gaza/Israel, sometimes Iran or Yemen, or a broad focus on NATO or China and its influence or relations with the USA.

It has been many months, maybe more than a year, since I've heard about what (now that I looked it up) sounds like a horrible situation in Sudan.

So I've worked with a bunch of charities and they have been working in Sudan and other local crisis areas for years. The problem is Sudan is old news as news cycles go. It's been on our air waves and we collectively moved on after the last crisis was effectively pushed through western media as solved. It wasn't. And the problems got worse. 

Also just how our media rushed to protect Israel, they also rushed to move on from Sudan to effectively appease our allies. We seem to always be complicit in a lot of shit that happens in that part of the world.

Just a complete travesty. El Fasher’s days were numbered but it still is horrific to see such mayhem. I wonder how this will affect the war now that the RSF can focus everything on the front.

The RSF, a side in Sudan's civil war, has captured El Fasher after a seige that lasted over a year. It descends from groups (Janjaweed) who committed the Darfur genocide, and it remains an especially brutal forceeven by regional standards. The RSF is funded by the UAE, Chad, and Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar. Note how this footage comes from the RSF fighters themselves.

There is no equivalence between the two sides in Sudan's civil war. The military dictatorship (SAF) has committed war crimes, but the RSF's violence is on a completely diferent level. Policies aimed towards each side should reflect this difference.

Please consider contacting to your congressperson/MP about this, and ask for sanctions on the UAE.

I think the Israeli-Palestine situation gets more attention in part because the US is directly complicit. Our tax dollars directly fund the genocide of Palestinians, so there is an actionable goal for US activists to pursue in opposing that genocide. I too wish Sudan got more attention, but I'm not sure what activists here can really do about it. The SAF and RSF are both already sanctioned. I suppose the foreign backers behind these atrocities could be sanctioned or boycotted but if we didn't punish Saudi Arabia for 9/11 it doesn't seem likely we would punish them for war crimes committed elsewhere.

It gets almost no attention because there is no major lobbying effort to bring awareness and no one wants to do anything about it.  If there was a lobby that spent billions of dollars on this (see, e.g., Islamic funding on manufacturing outrage re: the made-up genocide in Gaza) then more people would care.
